 No.443

Ladies and Gentlemen I welcome you to the first /lit/ty club thread. We will be accepting nominations and then whatever is nominated is put through a randomizer and selected.
A FEW RULES
1. You must provide a torrent or link to your selected text
2. The beginning of each month is a longer format and lasts throughout the month
3. It's good to have a little epitaph as to why you selected this book.

This month's theme is Tragedy. It can be any length, any time period, any author.

My first nom. is 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane
>4.48 Psychosis sees the ultimate narrowing of Sarah Kane's focus in her work. The struggle of the self to remain intact has moved in her work from civil war, into the family, into the couple, into the individual, and finally into the theatre of phychosis: the mind itself. This play was written in 1999 shortly before the playwright took her own life at age 28.

My second nomination is "The Maimed"
>Set in Prague, The Maimed relates the story of a highly neurotic, socially inept bank clerk who is eventually impelled by his widowed landlady into servicing her sexual appetites. At the same time he must witness the steady physical and mental deterioration of his lifelong friend who is suffering from an unnamed disease.

I should say I will randomize the nominations on August 30th

Your uneducated illiteracy never ceases to astound me.
You're a disgrace to this fine internet establishment of intellectual gentlemen with your pure ignorant bravado to such a degree, it almost forces me respect your titanium-coated nerve.
Please, relegate yourself to dwelling lesser boards such as /dunk/ and /dup/.
Simply lurking /lit/ will do you well enough, I'd strongly encourage.
One of Peking-Man wit may have potential to learn, or even be enlightened by such literature discussed here.
That is, should you be able to read at a college-level.

Keep the nominations short throughout the month and the beginning of each month it will be longer, it doesn't make much sense when you think about it but it gives a better pacing I think

I had a nomination but I read the synopsis and we avoided a big homo book.

Our Lady in the Flowers
>The novel tells the story of Divine, a drag queen who, when the novel opens, has died of tuberculosis and been canonised as a result. The narrator tells us that the stories he is telling are mainly to amuse himself whilst he passes his sentence in prison - and the highly erotic, often explicitly sexual, stories are spun to assist his masturbation. Jean-Paul Sartre called it "the epic of masturbation".

I'll come up with another another day

Eugene Oneguin by Pushkin, I wanted the Nabakov translation but I couldn't find it
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/23997.epub.images?session_id=156196f6e6bafbcd69b936a856e1eb82891ec163

>The story is told by a narrator (a lightly fictionalized version of Pushkin's public image), whose tone is educated, worldly, and intimate. The narrator digresses at times, usually to expand on aspects of this social and intellectual world. This narrative style allows for a development of the characters and emphasizes the drama of the plot despite its relative simplicity. The book is admired for the artfulness of its verse narrative as well as for its exploration of life, death, love, ennui, convention, and passion.

A Season in the Life of Emmanuel

One of the classics of Canadian literature, A Season in the Life of Emmanuel is a shocking expose of the realities of the grinding poverty and suffering inherent in rural life in the middle of the 20th century. Published in 1965 by Marie-Claire Blais, the novel was immediately controversial for its no-holds-barred depictions of the depredations of conservative patriarchy and Catholicism: child abuse, harmful sexual exploitation, familial dysfunction, and a lack of options for escape.
