its literally true though, plesiosaurs are more closely related to lizards and snakes than dinosaurs and chickens are literally theropod dinosaurs. Its not so much that people realized that birds are more dinosaur like than we previously thought (which is true) but more so than dinosaurs are more birdlike than we previously thought.

Those are only "true" because they keep redefining what a dinosaur is. Consider the name dinosaur which means scary lizard - when the term was originally invented it was meant to accommodate all prehistoric reptiles. Even the soyentists' newest definition still say that dinosaurs are a clade of reptiles, and like you yourself said a Plesiosaur is still a reptile. The only reasoning they have for Plesiosaur not being a dinosaur is literally because it lives in water, which is an effect of how, for some reason, ever since the 2000s they want Dinosauria to only be a clade of land dwelling tetrapod reptiles while it worked perfectly fine as a generalist term before.

What that actually means is that birds have certain very similar characteristics to some prehistoric reptiles, not every single one of which according to nu-soyence are even under the same clade. To automatically call all members of the Aves as living breathing dinosaurs is still a stretch. A more reasonable way to put it is if they had said all birds are descendants of a certain group of dinosaurs that evolved a very specific type of wings from their forelimbs.
