This seems like a meme thread but I'm going to use it
So, I've had some free time recently so picked up sketching. Hadn't done it for a few years but it was enjoyable. Going to post a couple of sketches I've worked on.
This is mainly because I want to give the new mod on /dup/ a wide berth, and blacks are lighting fireworks tonight to send the message "we can fuck up yo shit any time we want"
This sketch is a rough interpretation of Mon San Michelle in Normandy.

Here's a sketch of a craftsman home.
It's very rough on purpose. Trying to do a thing where you don't do an under-drawing or anything. Just a straight pencil sketch, so the perspective is usually just implied or fake.
I'm hoping to get good enough at this quick sketch technique to do this instead of photographs. It's a bit cartoonish but I think it has a log of character.

I can't really draw too much these days as I have to spend a few weeks preparing for a job interview.
Still I made sure I took the time tonight to do something.
The first image is just something I saw on cuckchan /pol/ a nice scene in Scotland (I think)
2nd is sketch on watercolor paper. Did not try to have detail. Just a base to anticipate painting over. Proportions are skewed as usual.
Last is a gimp trace off the original image. Again, sketchy without detail. Using a 10px pencil tool with pressure sensitivity (basic pencil).
Wanted to see the correspondence between my hand/eye coordination and something traced from a photograph.

Okay here's just a quick thing
traced it in gimp using a 3 pixel hard pencil tool
surprisingly difficult as I'm using a shitty tablet I found in the thrift shop. have to rotate the image to draw all "straight" lines horizontally. can't draw vertically and remain even remotely straight.
Don't quite know where I'm going with this. I'd like to start incorporating color, but everything I do looks shitty
still, learning gimp is interesting.

Okay I had done the above a few weeks ago. Freehand, 6b on watercolor paper. I kind of like it but only because it's handmade.
Attached is the original. Just some craftsman I pulled off the web.
The drawing is my attempt to do the same in kitra, with their soft pencil (4b) tool.
I fucked it up in some ways. I was rotating the actual image as I went (rather than just the view with the 4,6 keys) so the line quality got all fucked up as I went.Learned that.
Apart from that I really like it. Cheating some but fuck it I'm no artist.
Might try to use the Kitra "watercolor" stuff tonight but my hopes aren't high.

drawing is warding off my inclinations to commit suicide so I ditched leetcode problems to do the attached.
First is a scan from a book I have Mon San Michelle and Chartres. Just a figure from Chartres.
Next two images I did a few weeks ago. They're hand sketches on paper. 6b pencil but one with watercolors.

You should check out some of the krita tutorials, they have a water color brush that you can adjust the transparency of, some of the stuff I've seen people do makes me a bit envious, wish I had gotten into drawing way earlier.
I think that with a combo of the watercolors, adjusting the transparency and playing around with the blend tool you'll be able to get something like that. You're certainly a far better hand than I am when it comes to shading so I'm not going to hazard any advice in that section.
One the other hand though, a physical watercolor is pretty cool to have, especially if it's your own, so don't let me stop you from doing that either anon.

Okay I'll stop spamming this thread. Just enjoying this.
Thanks to the anon that suggested Kitra. It crashes from time to time but it's very good.
There are some attempts to do "watercolor" in kitra.
In all cases I added a new layer beneath the "pencil" drawing above, and set the pencil layer to combine via "multiply" since it had no alpha.
the first image was just done with the trackpad.
2nd and 3rd were done with may wacom 3c (I think) using the water-C basic round grain brush, which I think is pretty good.
Just picked some arbitrary colors. Not bad. Will experiment some more tonight.

Okay I did more ""drawing"" today
No idea how to really paint so I'm trying to break it down to get some kind of method.
First image is my original image, just run through an oil paint filter.
From that image I tried to pick like 4 colors that I thought I'd like to try painting with. Just 4 on purpose to try and keep things simple.
The next image is the original image mapped to those 4 colors. The colors themselves are on the right hand side, so I could use eye dropper tool to pick them up.
Last image is my attempt to paint (under my pencil drawing from above) using just those 4 colors. Meh. Not great but I feel I'm learning.
Krita (which I've been calling Kitra) is phenominal. Really enjoying it. Might try to redo the above tonight just to see what I learned.

trying to find some time to do drawing tonight.
I've been watching some videos on youtube which are pretty good but difficult to replicate on my own.
So I did an experiment. Just an experiment drawing simple cirlces. Just hand drawn, nothing perfect.
the first image is a scan of some circles I drew in about 10 seconds with a pencil and paper.
The next image is my attempt to do the same in Krita with a tablet I have, an old tablet. And in that case I struggled for a good half hour.
There's a fundamental issue there about freehand drawing with a tablet.
Not sure what the issue is but I only got this tablet by chance and I can't get a new one.
Going to just keep to tracing pictures in Krita and trying to paint over them but even that I think will be flawed. Not sure where to go from here.

what the hell here's a redo of the gahoole tux above. still very basic.
The key here was resizing the original image so the """drawing""" is a higher resolution. I did it 2x original size.
The pencil tool I'm using (Krita pencil-1-hard is pretty good for lines, but the one I'm using for tones (pencil-5-tilted) is garbage. You see the same pattern showing up in the dark areas. Looks very artificial.

thx anon. that's gonna be pretty challenging so I'm going to have to think about if for a few days.
In the meanwhile here's an simple 60s rocket that I could put in the foreground. No north korean flag as the ones I drew on didn't match the geometry well. oh well.

it's pretty late (2am here) but I ended up drawing quite a bit. enjoying this.
Here's an image of a Dodge Charger (1969) that I plan on putting in some form into that gahoole image above. In the trace of it I only added basic tones and did a pretty sloppy job of it but that's fine.
I'm getting a good idea of how to work that properly. I imagine you should mask off each section you're doing tones for (or painting) and work off that.
if I can get back to this tomorrow or sunday I might try to do that sexy lady's ass and a cityscape background too.

I took your basic layout and put this together. Didn't try to cut out the images carefully as I'm just looking for a guide for "painting".
So I'm using Krita, and using A4 canvas size at 300 pixels/inch. I believe that's correct movie poster aspect, even though A4 is smaller.
The blue guides are taken from a movie poster layout template, as I want to leave room for text.
The background will remain white as I saw that was the case with many old 60s movie posters.
I'm thinking I'd make the full figure gahoole somewhat full color, though maybe stylized some, but the background elements in some kind of monotone color (blue or green tones) just to keep it simple. Will probably look better since my sills are pretty weak.
Rather than a sexy babe I put in flopson as your suggested "villain" is plainly Zach.
I'm not going to put text onto it (people on /tv/ seem to be better than I at that) but I was thinking like:
/tv/ presents
Gahoole IS "The Man from K.I.N.O"
Gahoole as Chad Thundercock
Zachary K Hasbrouk as "The Hapa"
Emma Flopson as Maya Cocksleeve
Produced by Harvey Weinstein
Directed by Christopher Nolan

like that.
I might have lineart tonight.

I'm excited for how this will turn out. Will you put that text font on the bottom in that super tight lettering like in all the other movie posters?

here's the current lineart. the vegas sign is a bit shitty but it's only going to be a few areas of color.
they overlap a bit because each is on a separate layer.
I had to redo most of it because I wanted to make sure I was always using the same tool at the same resolution with the same settings.
In the future it probably will make sense to do work on a standard a4 300 pixels/inch size or something.
>>1065
I dunno. I was thinking a real retro lettering like the old James Posters. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post.
I don't think I'll add lettering at all, would rather leave all that to someone else.
Lastly I guess I'm just going to spend some time laying done tones and experimenting with colors and tools. Going to take me a while to determine just how to finish this.

He's my first attempt to paint in gahoole.
Not bad in some ways but it's about as good as I can do currently. Learning a lot though.
Best things I learned was in regard to brushes. There's a brush set out there called "deevad" brushes. I'm typically using "deevad 2f basic flow" for most areas, it's very transparent and allows the smooth effects you can see on the face and suit.
Also using "deevad 2c hair for hair" which is also good.
Just finding those brushes was a boon.
Some bad things:
I'm trying to use masks for each area as I paint but it sometimes leaves gaps between color areas. Also it takes a while to set the masks up. Krita selection tools also tend to make the application crash.
Going to try and work on either flopson or Zach next as they look like they'll be hard to do well. Not sure what I'm going to do.

this is what I have so far. Lost my work a few times with kitra crashes and also made a few false starts using shitty colors. There's good and bad in there but I think this is the way I have to go
> like the light touch watercolor effects I can get with brush "water C basic round Grain" but only seems to work with colors that are not vivid (less hue(?) in HSV). That's primarily why I'm going with monochrome for the bg. When I know more about colors maybe i could take a stab at doing a more colorful bg.

I really wanted to do more a sort of sketchy and painterly bg (like the one for From Russia With Love) but I can't do that yet. comes out like shit. When I know more maybe I'll try again.
There's a couple of things I want to work on for a few days so I'm calling this done for the moment. I may try to put text on it next week (Krita doesn't seem good in that category) unless anyone else wants to superimpose some text.

I really like this as a simplistic visual effect for colour. I tried something out like this where I first painted basic shapes and colour and then used pens to draw out the line work and details. With that being said, I can imagine these have a lot of room for growth, the third one specifically has the feeling of a rainy day. I'm interested in seeing this concept grow, great work

First off, there's way, way more unappealing artwork than what we're seeing right now, so don't knock yourself down too bad. The drawing itself is, indeed, amateurish, but the only way you can develop more skills is by practicing so I can't say much on how you can exactly get "better"

Now, as for your original question as to the drawing itself, I think the mask looks like your trying to hide from actually drawing the face. Not only that but the mask itself is just blank. Maybe add some detail that'll give some dimension or texture to the mask he's wearing (vents, fabric folds, cloth pattern, etc)

My best advice is try drawing a full plain face and adding features and details. Maybe look up reference photos and see how you can make the mask more form fitted to the character's face.

Other than that idk, maybe back up a bit so we can see more of the character or work more on the hair to make it look less scribbled in pro tip: fill in with a dark purple, THEN scribble hair lines over with a lighter colour. But it's all up to you fam, keep at the good work and don't knock yourself down cuz it's a good start.
