recently ive taken up playing indies these days
i feel AAA games are too expensive and bloated with stupid checklists that consist of meaningless busy work
you pay top dollar… and they often aren't optimized well or can recieve updates that ruin the experience
indies are not only cheaper but you're in the pure gameloop much faster; open and play right away
no latest cutting edge visuals but theyve got striking unique artstyles instead

Indie games are guilty of this too though - every other indie game is a fucking roguelike AKA we couldn't be bothered to make a real game so play some randomized dogshit 1000x until you win.

Nice job moving the goalpost from saying none of the games look like the ones I posted to focusing on just one of them - and then conceding there is in fact a similarity. Fail! Imagine attempting to prove indieshit is original - the whole point of pixelart stylized games is to return back to a earlier time in gaming - their inspiration is explicit. None of those devs would ever deny this like you are trying to.

Videogames used to soothe my soul, old videogames still do, some indies do too.
The issue with indies isn't even the amateurish stuff or the huge amount of shovelware.

That is almost dead on, but I've played a few more than that. Last one I played was Stardew Valley in 2017. Decently playable game, but with a generic cutesy aesthetic, shitty music, diversity, blunt millennial social commentary - the map was ripped straight from Zelda Link's Awakening, and the activities in the game consisted of a bunch of things taken from other games. Mining ore like it's Pokemon Diamond & Pearl's underground area while holding Link's sword and killing slimes, really? It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I never tried Stardew Valley because I'm not into Harvest Moon-style farming sims, but I did check out Eastward, made by the same people, and I really enjoyed it. It's more of a straightforward action RPG, some people say it's inspired by the Mother series, except the fighting isn't turn based. They made a DLC for it that is basically a farming sim, it's pretty solid as far as those go.

 No.13084

>made by the same people
You're thinking of the publisher, Chucklefish, which no longer publishes Stardew. Stardew was made by one guy who hasn't released any other games yet. He seems to have been working on some weird chocolate shop game for some time now but it's still not out.

Assuming the genre is sims is actually one of the pitfalls that led to the Harvest Moon series going to shit. These games are best described as farming/social RPGs. When the game elements get too sim-like they end up sucking.

You still have a working DS? Did you have to change the battery?

 No.13089

>>13088
More than one, and I haven't had to change the battery on either of them. The main one I've been using I found at a Goodwill in 2013 or 14 basically new in its box. I just bought another one for $70 last year - again, in phenomenal condition. Working DSes aren't a rarity by any stretch of the imagination. People don't really care about this kind of stuff - on the other hand, 3DSes are extremely popular and inflated in price, even though that system has a small and rather pisspoor library. I rarely touch mine, though I did play Pokemon Moon for the first time a year or two ago via a difficulty hack - it's actually a good game, it has beautiful cutscenes and feels like you're playing an anime. It has different strengths compared to the older games.

 No.13090

>>13089
The only one I ever had was a DS Lite. I really enjoyed the thing, but I didn't have much time to play it, because I was always working. I ended up giving it to a girl I was seeing at the time, and now I've got a few DS games left over that I don't know what to do with, and no plans to get another DS, although now that you're telling me they're cheap and abundant, I may look into picking one up.

 No.13091

>>13090
Those are the ones I have, the Lites. They're good, and I have a certain fondness for them. The only issue is their d-pads are kind of sucky at registering diagonals. The only DS with a good (top-tier even?) d-pad is the original one from 2004 with the terribly dark screen - it actually has the exact same d-pad as the GBA SP. Only a few games are badly affected by this anyway, however.

 No.13092

>>13089
>even though that system has a small and rather pisspoor library
3DS library is pretty nuts imo, to me it feels a bit like a better PSP library
I think if you look in terms of originality, the DS is gonna have a better library, but i certainly wouldn't call the 3DS piss poor in that sense

Not him but every single game I played on the 3ds was complete trash. I don't know how they did it. I tried mario kart 7, mario and luigi dream team, mario 3d land, fossil fighters frontier, I did actually try a couple more than that too but I can barely remember at this point. I know there are some good ones but man the "system sellers" and the ones I was interested in all sucked.

I agree with some of what you've said, I beat Mario Kart 7 and thought it was okay, but didn't feel like it was a serious improvement over DS.
I beat 3D Land, I respect it for being a unique take on Mario (3D mario but with game design more like 2D mario) but it does just feel inferior to 64 or Galaxy.
Dream Team I haven't played, looks like an obviously inferior sequel to the earlier games, I'm surprised they keep making Mario and Luigi games.

3DS Games I really enjoyed and recommend:
>Layton 5: Miracle Mask
A really good entry in the Layton series, unfortunately 6 and 7 were not as good.
>Ace Attorney 5, 6, Layton vs
Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2 also exist and have amazing sound tracks, but I don't think the cases are as good
>Virtue's Last Reward
Mind-bending sequel to the acclaimed 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, which is itself a spiritual successor to the influential Otogirisou and Infinity series.
>Kirby Triple Deluxe
It's Kirby, it's fun, nothing more needs to be said. Haven't played the sequel where Kirby has a mech.
>Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3D
Beautiful remakes of some really good games
>Kid Icarus Uprising
Phenomenal unique and creative game by the creator of Smash Bros.
>Fire Emblem Awakening
Revived a near dead strategy game franchise by introducing eugenics. You control which characters marry each other and their offspring also become playable characters.
>Fire Emblem Echoes
A massive, complete overhaul of the second Fire Emblem game. More than just a reboot, it's pretty much an original game.
>Pokemon XY, ORAS, SM, USUM
They're solid but obviously inferior to previous entries.
>Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Nintendo XCOM clone.
>Etrian Odyssey 4
Retro-style rpg with amazing music.
>Detective Pikachu
Baby's first adventure game, but surprisingly entertaining.

But the real reason I say it's like the PSP is there's a lot of games almost nobody has even played, from the first party games that barely anybody touched like Culdcept, Fatal Frame 3 (Spirit Camera), WarioWare Gold, STEAM, Detective Pikachu, etc. to the supposedly solid 3rd party titles that few have played (Ever Oasis comes to mind) to the really esoteric stuff like the Medabots game where women are forcibly stripped by their bots exploding when you beat them or Conception II, a jrpg where the goal is to "classmate" with your female classmates to produce "star children" to use in combat.
