The collection was worth an estimated $50,000 to $100,000, Holler said. He was also just three games short of completing the entire NES library.
The games had sentimental value beyond their price tags. Holler said his mother gave him his first NES console when he was 11 years old, setting him on a collecting journey that took him through stores, gaming conventions and trips across Washington. Over the years, the hobby became something he shared with his family, including his son, Chris Sterling.
Holler had planned to pass the collection on to his grandchildren, with the hope that it might eventually help pay for their college education. Sterling said he grew up joining his father in the search for the next game.
"To watch that essentially lifelong collection just ripped out is heartbreaking," Sterling said.
Interest in Nintendo's classic games remains strong since the NES's initial release more than 40 years ago. In June, a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for a record $3 million at Heritage Auctions. Classic NES games dominated the auction's top lots, including a copy of The Legend of Zelda that sold for $375,000. Heritage Auctions said the event generated more than $5 million in sales.

Hey Gahoole, I missed your last stream, but I watched part of the vod and heard you were debating getting a Switch 2 and Donkey Kong Bananza before the price goes up. I have both, so I wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
The Switch 2 is just a souped up Switch 1. A lot of the time I forget I'm playing a different console because of how similar it is. I got it because it seems like it will have at least a few worthwhile exclusives and because I wanted something to play newer games on (I didn't upgrade my PC before ram prices spiked and the PS5 and the XSX have nothing). I think that's the right choice if you're in the same boat as me.
Now on to Donkey Kong Bananza,
>Very similar to Mario Odyssey, as you would expect. The jumping and physics in general feel almost the same.
>The bananas are exactly the same as the moons, except sometime you have to break them out of their rock casing to collect them.
>It also lets you climb on most surfaces and has shrines with short challenges like Breath of the Wild
>Its most unique point is the destructible environment, which is fun for a little bit, but can get boring after a while
>The early levels and the later levels are really fun, but most of the middle levels are tedious.
>The last level especially is really fun. It's a fast food theme park.
>There's only one snow level and it's a letdown.
>The worst level is themed around thunderstorms, and you have to fight the same boss three times.
>There's a racing level with Diddy and Dixie Kong, and the racing controls are terrible.
>There are two levels with lots of swimming and they're both actually really good.
>DK has transformations that each give him different abilities. 2 of them you barely use outside of the level where you get them.

Ultimately, I'd say if you like Mario Odyssey, you'll probably like Bananza. That being said, I wouldn't get a Switch 2 just for it. I've really only played Pokémon Unite and Arena of Valor (currently playing).
