Arc System Works made BlazBlue, essentially a Guilty Gear Lite in order to pander to casuals for a wider audience. This intention was stated explicitly: Guilty Gear fans can keep their hardcore fighter while we do this. Guilty Gear was spared for years while they focused on BlazBlue and eventually we got one more excellent update in the form of Accent Core Plus R (although unfortunately they crippled the PC port with Steam cancer). However, BlazBlue finally ended. And ASW decided to take a big steaming shit on Guilty Gear. They threw out over a decade of mechanical refinements to the characters and overall system, made all the surviving characters look stupid, slowed the game the fuck down for stupid gimmicks, and overall decided to make a fucking ugly 3D game like the recent Street Fight abominations. The BlazBlue-ification of Guilty Gear. That's what happened to Guilty Gear. So nice of you to finally take notice.

That was a fan theory but it was always easily disproven by looking at the release timeline from #Reload to AC+R. Sammy wasn't stopping new Guilty Gear games from being produced.
