How's that self-imposed challenge going, anon? You do challenge yourself… don't you? Tell us about it.

 No.8535

Teetotalism was surprisingly easier than expected. I haven't drank since last year.

Now I've began to abstain from soda. Trying to lose some weight.

It wasn't clear from your post that you were referring to game challenges, so I talked about life challenges. Be more specific.

Lately I've been thinking a bit more seriously about beating Raiden Fighters Jet on one credit (with a real battle phase ending). I've always respected this game on casual play, but returning to it after successfully clobbering Raiden Fighters 2, I was frankly shocked at what a gigantic increase in intensity it is from the previous game. To such a degree that it actually turned me off and I took a break from the series for a while. The last few stages are batshit ridiculous and I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to approach them.

Beating Dark Souls 3 but actually being good at it.

I've been trying to find a good game to play without looking at games made 20 or more years ago. Shit's impossible, man.

For most of the campaign in operation: flashpoint on og eggs box I tried to beat every mission without a casualty. I can't tell you how many hours I spent on the beach invasion mg level desperately trying to win every dice roll I had no control over, trying to use my 1 allotted save as tactically as possible….it was all worth it desu

 No.8623

I can't do shit until I can afford a new PC, which should be happening in like two paychecks. My current one is like over six years old and can't run any of the hot new vidya I keep wanting to play. Soon, tho. Soon.

 No.8624

I thought I'd be able to collect all the Smiley Flowers and red coins in my first playthrough of Yoshi's Crafted World. Boy was I wrong.

 No.8659

I never use pre-promoted units in Fire Emblem and I try not to use bombs in shmups unless I have no choice.

 No.8660

I don't know if it's worth forcing myself to play Doom the 'pro' way.
>no saving, UV, pistol start all the way
The more I try to prove myself as a 'pro', the less fun I have. /v/ of all chans are into this mentality and I think I'm beginning to realize that I was just pretending to be an imageboard user, when I am a closeted normalfag.

>no saving
Do you mean that as in no loading your game back if you die, or do you mean no saving your progress at all? I do the former and also play on Ultra-Violence with WADs I've beaten before. I'm also prone to enabling fast monsters too.

 No.8663

I beat Doom 2 and TNT Evilution like this a couple weeks ago, gave me far greater appreciation for level design than I had in the past. Did use saving strictly to suspend the playthrough and continue it later. GZDoom has this asinine anti-feature that people have been complaining about for over 15 years now where it automatically reloads your last save when you die instead of doing the proper restart-the-level-with-pistol behavior, so you have to actually delete your saves right after you load them if you want to play it properly like this.

I'm on to Plutonia now and I'd forgotten what a big difficulty spike it is from the other two.

 No.8666

>>8661
I only save at the beginning of each level with a pistol and 50 bullets. So, I'm not referring to permadeath.

>>8663
The most current version of GZDoom should have pistol start option. I think. Speaking of GZDoom, I actually do like it. Especially with Corruption Cards and a Smooth Vanilla-weapons animation mod, it can really make nice gameplay. However, it's SO bloated. There was that jewtube video of someone with good specs running GZDoom with stuttering issues.

 No.8667

It's a 30-year-old game, nobody cares if you savescum.

 No.8668

>The most current version of GZDoom should have pistol start option.
It has an option for always starting from pistol, but after 15 years of people complaining about this it still does not have an option to disable the automatic save loading behavior and only do pistol starts after dying.

You really think you can look yourself in the mirror with any kind of self-respect as a games enthusiast after savescumming? Think again…

 No.8673

If savescumming is just saving after every monster closet encounter, then I agree that Doom gatekeeping is a good idea. But having a couple of saves per level isn't gonna ruin your reputation.

 No.8675

>>8673
>reputation
The only people who'd care would be spirits, aliens, or remote viewers observing me, because I play vidya alone in my room, and they'd all have an understanding that I savescum to save time I can utilize for playing other vidya.

 No.8676

I just don't find it as fun to play it that way.

 No.8678

It's "fun" to put yourself through a gauntlet losing hours of your time cumulatively by having to restart the level every time you die? To each his own, I suppose.

Of course. If you think the purpose of games is just to accumulate completed content then I have to wonder why you aren't spending your time better on a different hobby, like watching lots of movies or reading lots of books. The purpose of a game is to test your skill. If you're not doing that then why bother?

 No.8682

>The purpose of a game is to test your skill.
You always say this, but I respectfully disagree. The purpose of a game is the enjoyment of the experience, and repeating levels from the beginning when you die diminishes that. Game development has evolved over time so there's less of that kind of repetition, as they've found better techniques to extend a game's length.

Taking Total War II's map without ever truly losing a territory. I get this done via loopholes, when the timurids arrived I simply sold them antioch for a heavy sum so I could focus on conquering the Eastern Roman Empire, Russia and England which all turned on me. Also wanna colonize AmeriKKK before I finally take over Asia Minor and the middle east and cement total Reich victory. This was a shitty loophole but I am bad at vidya.

 No.8776

Imagine being a pajeet or latino "man", that's fucking sad. I would just straight up "reset" the game.

I've been playing River Crossing in fheroes2. It's a bit of a hard map even on normal settings, although I imagine with the original HOMM2 AI it's easier. You have an enemy with two cities on the east side of the river, and one to the south with one city. You start with one city, and if you die if you lose that one at all in any point in the game.

So far I've been able to beat it starting off with a necromancer city, and I think I've done so with others in the past. I'm trying to get good enough that I can do so consistently, but starting off as a barbarian or especially a knight sucks. I always try to buy a decent hero for casting spells at the beginning a game if I don't have one.

There's an orchestra in Poland dedicated to playing music from the series.
