That's the Poison saga. The Japanese designers of the original Final Fight were told by their American handlers that games showing women getting beaten up are a big no-no so instead of replacing her in-game models with that of a dude they simply shitposted and agreed to make up some bullshit about her being nonbinary. This became such a forced meme that even the game's original Japanese devs are still walking on eggshells around the topic today, insisting that it was never their idea to make her a female and just point fingers at the original concept artists, claiming they couldn't remember if the artist who originally designed her ever envisioned her to be female. To strengthen the plausible deniability aspect they even said that they forgot which artist actually designed Poison lol. I also remember one interview where they backpedaled and gave the non-answer where it's up to the players to interpret her as female or otherwise.

But the point is over multiple interviews they never explicitly admitted that she should have been female and only implied it. What's even more retarded is the fact that Poison's palette swap, Roxy, is still one hundred percent female - perhaps because the American handlers of the first Final Fight never even played the game and didn't know she existed. There are theories that the primary reason the American prudes did not want Poison to show up was not about her being female, but because of her fetishistic attire. This kind of dumb shit is on par with switching around the names of the Shadaloo dudes in SF just because they were afraid Mike Tyson would sue them for having a black boxer named M. Bison, while in all likelihood Mike wouldn't have given a shit that the Japanese made a parody of him. This was a time when Schwarzenegger of all people repeatedly worked with the Japanese to shoot some dumb ads that poked fun at him, and he never showed any dislike of it.

What's funny is that just 2 years later the first game in the Streets of Rage aka Bare Knuckle series came out with Blaze and the female mooks whose designs are just as risque as Poison's, with the latter looking very similar to her and the fetishistic aspect ramped up even more. The Americans at Sega didn't say anything and no drama ever came out of it.

I remember having a book about video game history back in the mid 2000s, and I was really confused when Dan Bunten was brought up. They were calling him "Dani Bunten Berry" and referring to him in female terms, but the vintage game box art or promotional material that was reproduced in the book clearly called him "Dan Bunten" and I think showed him as a bearded man. I knew trannies existed back then, but I wasn't familiar enough with them to have any frame of reference for anything like that. I don't think I knew of any real-world cases of anyone "transitioning" and didn't put much thought into the idea (I think I might have genuinely believed there was surgery out there that would change your sex) so I really couldn't process it. The poor guy seemed to end up regretting what he did. He openly advised people not to follow his lead unless it was a last resort and said that he'd become a worse programmer since trooning out.

My first time encountering a troon in the wild was a tranny mod temporarily banning me from the GameSpot forums maybe a few years after that. That was still a bit before the tranny thing had become such a hot-button issue, but it seems like they'd already been moving toward court eunuch status even then.
