That's what I've heard, but Newegg is selling several sub-$1000 systems for around $900, tagged as "AI-Ready". What did they mean by this? Can a GeForce RTX 4060 process AI images?

A 4060 non-TI is garbage even for mid-level gaming. It is pitifully incapable for AI work. If you want to do serious AI stuff, you need at least a 3090 TI. In general you should not own a GPU with less than 16 gb of vram at this point.

AMD has good GPUs at decent prices but none of their shit works with anything AI related. Nvidia owns AI right now.

So what price point am I realistically looking at to do this? Is it worth it to build my own, because I don't mind paying a little bit more for the convenience of pre-built, and I don't want to screw something up.

TI is Nividia's "premium" grade of a certain gpu. So there is 4060 TI which is more powerful than the regular 4060, the 3090 TI which is more powerful than the regular 3090 etc. AMD does this with their "xt" and "xtx" cards.

At least $3,000 for the GPU alone if you want to be able to run something locally. Otherwise, you are stuck with your phone and the phone apps like the rest of us. By the time you get done with the rest of the computer including the gpu you are looking at $5,000.
