I know sports video games often don't have the best reputation, that's mostly thanks to their current direction of monopolies focused on PvP online play only to capitalize on microtransactions as much as it can. However it wasn't always like this, video games began with titles like Tennis For Two and Pong, sports are fundamental to this medium, I have many fond memories of playing video games based on sports I like, either arcade or simulation, often something in between, it's all a treat if done well. It'd be cool to have a thread for this genre for once.

I love Winning Eleven more than anything else, what do you all play?

I was a big advocate of Wii Sports bowling back in the day, I played it with friends, family, everyone I know. Nothing since has come close to that level of engagement, sports-wise.

>sports are fundamental to this medium
Pretty sure they're the literal opposite of this medium.

Winning Eleven was the best sports vidya franchise up to maybe 2011.

I'd say PES2015 is when they stopped being #1 since that's when they finally gave in and added microtransactions. I recall titles like PES2011 and PES2012 getting a lot of hate then compared to FIFA, but I loved them and felt it was both realistic and fun…

I'm going to download the latest eFootball update later tonight, apparently it pays homage to Winning Eleven, so it's finally a good enough reason for me to play this after months of losing interest, the lack of offline just makes eFootball worthless to me, wish they'd just make a Winning Eleven 2026 already… maybe if many download this update they'll see there's a demand for it?

Bomba Patch 2026 would be great too!

Neo Turf Masters (really slick golfing game)
Kunio games (aka River City or Nekketsu) (there is a crazy amount of these all with different names, all spin-offs of a beat-em-up, many of which use the same engine or mechanics as the beat-em-up)

Tecmo Bowl
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball

That's about all I can think of that I know I like. I think Mario Tennis was fun, but I never played it much. I had one of these things as a kid, and I liked it for when I wasn't allowed to sit in front of an actual TV or monitor.

Well, the eFootball update had a single cool element, the recreation of the OG Winning Eleven, AKA Goal Storm, at least on the graphical side, but with modern gameplay… charming, but it'll die on the next update and I'll never be able to replay it, which is why I hate the idea of GAAS that Konami embraced for the IP, also the rest of the update, the tribute to such a major IP, is just player cards for people to buy with microtransactions… fucking LAME. I'm going back to the classics, eFootball's still garbage.

>you watch him, you see the whole game
I'm a barcafag but I always think this del Bosque quote was way overblown by most Barcelona fans. Busquets was one the best defensive midfielders sure, but he wasn't this football god they kept claiming he is. He was at his best years with the club because there were also two of the generation's best midfielders in front of him. All football fans will overly glaze players they like and overly hate players they dislike, but with Barca fans it's way worse than just that, it is as if they are personally offended that Cristiano Ronaldo even existed. I also dislike the fact that too many Barca fans are Americans and Brits only latching on to the club because of its ties to dead Spanish commies.

I posted Busquets even though I'm not a Barcelona fan, I like them and a lot of their legendary lineups, their colors and kits, but there are things I dislike about them too. I agree that the quote is overblown, of course he was important, but Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were more important in my eyes… he's still my favorite though, he played with class and with simple body feints he'd escape pressure from the opposition like it was nothing, he made it look simple and I find that so enjoyable to watch.

With Barcelona you can't even be just a regular fan of the club's signature playing style, tactical modifications by their respective coaches or even just the multitude of superstar players they have had, you also have to larp as a Catalan neocommie redditor and it pisses me off. You're even forced to give a shit about their female football league. What these secondaries don't even know is the Catalonia independence thing was never about anti-fascism or even a class struggle of peasants vs the elite. Catalonia was always one of the wealthiest principalities in the region over the centuries and the Catalans considered themselves pretty much the Iberian Burgundians, only to finally ask Daddy Spain to help when their overeager nobles bit more than they can chew against the Habsburgs.

It turned into a very Reddit club over the years sadly. Football wise I still love them for a variety of reasons, but I agree there's a lot surrounding the club and fanbase which can be annoying, which is why I often find myself supporting Madrid in El Classicos.

It's not good because it's popular, but it being the most popular in the world is a sign that there must be some quality to it, it's appealing to a wide variety of people and there's merit in that. Also, your main argument was that it was "3rd world" and my claim of it being the most popular in Europe goes against that. What sports you think are better and why? I'd love to hear.

I'm playing through Winning Eleven 2002 with patches lately, it's crazy how fans still make updates patches with current squads, logos, kits and tactics, the passion makes it SOVL and even more fun to play, also crazy how it feels more like football than the current EA Sports titles, and especially compared to Konami's current F2P mobile fiasco on consoles, this is still the peak for me.

 No.13198

With PS3 onwards, it became more difficult for people to make alternative versions of FIFA and Winning Eleven, It was quite popular in the PS2 era for you and some friends to make a modified and updated version of the teams and sell or give them as gifts to your friends.
