If you were looking to buy a handheld emulator that could play games up to the 4th console generation (+ 7th handheld generation) what hardware features would you want to see in it, and what price point would you be willing to pay for those features?

 No.12988

Bar none, the most important thing is good controls. If you can't at least get the fucking controls right on a game control device (see Steam Deck), you have nothing. Next most important concern after that is proper portability, followed by battery life.

 No.12989

I agree with what >>12988 said, controls are #1. The ability to connect it to a TV is also the new standard set by the Switch.

Good controls as in high quality mechanical switches on the buttons, or good controls as in more options like the touchpads the 'eck has? Also the 'ecks is basically the only console or handheld that actually comes with hall effect sticks stock.

For size and portability how big would be acceptable. For 4th gen console and 7th gen handheld the games were designed with small screens in mind so text and such is scaled to that so something like the size of a cellphone screen is almost overkill. Would a gimmick like handles with the controls on them that fold over the screen to make it easier to pocket something you would see as a positive or a negative? Like doubling the thickness when it is in storage mode, but extending out to give you a decent grip while playing without obscuring the screen.

>>12989
Having a type-C usb that functions as a charging port and video out is ezpz even if it would have to come with some kinda adaptor so that people can directly connect it to a HDMI port.

 No.12991

A couple important things to note from an expert:
The normal going price for one of those things is $25 to 60 depending on how good it is. The absolute most you can get for one is maybe $90, but that's pushing it, with $75 being a more realistic high price.

If it can play 7th gen handhelds it can probably play a lot of 5th gen console games in general, especially PSX, which is notoriously easy to run.

Things you can add to up the value proposition:
>Rumble
>At least 1 joystick, ideally clickable
>a good accelerometer (these are very rare among handheld emulation devices)
>wifi
>a clamshell design with a reliable hinge
>a second screen for DS emulation
>a 16:9 screen for better gba enjoy

The screen is the single most expensive component when designing a handheld device. Raising the cost of a handheld by at least 30% which would be useless outside of the DS library seems like it would severally limit potential sales and almost 100% guarantee Nintendo would do everything in their power to send you to federal pound me in the ass prison.

Rumble is a massive drain on power and would significantly increase the form factor.
Button joysticks are pretty much a given.
Accelerometer usage entirely depend on the games that require them and the amount of sensitivity needed. It is extremely simple to slot them on the motherboard, but it would raise the price and I can't think of any game off the top of my head that uses them outside of Roco Loco. For the clamshell cover wouldn't the handles with the controls serve the same purpose. 16:9 is pretty standard nowadays.

HMI touchscreens are a little difficult to program for, but it can be done. I just don't know if the DS roms that are available have the touchscreen features baked into them.

GBA had an accelerometer, a lot of its games supported it.

 No.12995

>>12994
GBA also had a photodiode, but the only game I remember that used it was that one with the two characters who had light and dark powers respectively and the light character's gun would charge the longer you played under direct sunlight. Should I include one of those too (they are super cheap, but I don't know if the roms support physical hardware)?

This game, and I had no idea Kojima made it until I just searched it up. Also it was the sequel that had the dark character. Both were good games.

I'd like to update my statement. It turns out there actually weren't too many of these accelerometer games pre-smartphone era, because the accelerometers were implanted in the cartridges, they weren't part of the console, so needless to say, they were lower-margin games.

Kirby's Tilt n' Tumble was my jam back in the day, I probably played that the most on GBC.

really liked tilt and tumble, dream course was another fun kirby spinoff.

almost every chinese handheld game console made in the last 3 years supports rumble
most people just don't know that since so few games actually use it

One of the few things that always bothered me are the games that took extra gimmicks making them impossible to emulate, something that VB/GBA/Arcade/Wii games suffer from, but then there's the question:
>Are you missing out?

Chinks are retarded dogeating faggots

>>13003
The thing is that I don't think those gimmicks were actually emulated. In the cases previous mentioned I don't think accelerometer and photovoltaic gimmicks were actually ported over to emulators so it is a moot point if that physical hardware is actually included since the software doesn't actually feature it

wii emulators support accelerometer games
I've played kirby's tilt and tumble on a hacked wii

I'm doing alright with just my smartphone and tablet for those exact consoles, they don't require much powerful so pretty much any portable electronic device nowadays can run them well enough, even with things like CRT shaders, which are a must for me. I'm hoping to get a foldable eventually since their screens' aspect ratio is perfect for retro, add a controller and it's just perfect.

 No.13303

it looks good to me, I already have some devices with similar specs so I haven't tried that exact one, but I considered getting it
that said if you plan on buying directly from the chinks using aliexpress you should wait until a sale since it's in the price range where you can get about $10 off
if you don't plan on buying through aliexpress I'd just get it now, assuming you have 1 or 0 other chink gameboys
>>13195
those things actually have a 3.5 inch (measured diagonally) screen, which is actually fairly large, for comparison the Gameboy Advance has a much smaller 2.9 inch screen

Why not a Retroid Pocket Mini V2?

 No.13319

>>13316
the cubexx is about $42 on sale
I think the mini is about $200 on sale, so they're not in the same product class at all
at that price point you're also contending with stuff like the japanese Switch Lite, which is being sold on Aliexpress for $140, not even on sale
