tl;dr the existence of the game is a huge plothole, and there is no way they could take it that it'll make sense while respecting the lore

Witchers in-universe are genetically mutated abominations that need to undergo a very specific form of gene therapy as they're undergoing puberty - in turn changing a non-magic attuned human into somebody who can use basic cantrips, is attuned to vague magic current and able to digest neurotoxin-grade potions - and thus is able to fight magic-based monsters (caused by an event where dimensions overlapped, leaving humans and monsters stranded in a world they don't belong in). Most Witchers are failed creations in some way that simply "survived" and have incomplete powers - they're also sterile, emotionally numb, feel ill almost all the time and many have significant disabilities. Geralt is the one-in-a-million outlier success story who turned out strong + complete, and even he still has all of the downsides. Most children die during this process because of genetic mismatches and fucking up the difficult alchemy involved, and the Witcher 3 has an important main questline emphasizing that the School of the Wolf (Geralt's school, and the most stable + safe + balanced of the versions of the process) is functionally extinct, after the last person who knew how to do the process dies, and the equipment to do it is destroyed. The takeaway is that the remaining 2-3 Witchers all think "good riddance", since the tradeoff is that monsters are going extinct anyways as humanity develops, and a witcher's work is becoming increasingly scarce and dangerous as the few remaining monsters are less the "shambling zombie nuisance" types and more "the pissed off serial killer demonbeast the size of a schoolbus that can blend into crowds with polymorphing" types.
There are however, other Schools of Witchers. Most of them are also extinct, for basically the same reason (there's just not enough work left + witchers are socially untrusted outcasts that nobody likes). On top of the Wolves (Geralt's), the Bears + Gryphons + Manticores are all extinct. The only non-extinct schools are the Cats and the Vipers. The Viper school (focused on alchemy and poisons) is the entire basis of the Witcher 2, with the last Viper turning traitor and trying to appeal to an invading empire to let him refound his school as part-time Witchers, part-time supersoldier assassins (for the sake of having some stock of Witchers to deal with the remaining monsters - now with imperial funding to "finish the job", and a long-term plan after monsters are eradicated). His fate is non-guaranteed, and you can choose to kill him or let him live.
The Cats on the other hand have an associated questline in 3 emphasizing that their process is the most unstable, the most dangerous and produces the weakest results with no focus that have a habit of going into psycho bloodrages like a fox in a henhouse whenever they get stressed out (and they trade it off by being produced via a travelling caravan of kidnappers that go through dead orphans at an expendable rate). Cats live fast and die young, and while Geralt catches flak for getting involved in human affairs, most Cats are hired thieves and hitmen for hire (making them the most disliked and valid-to-kill of all the schools, in a career path that everyone dislikes anyways).

Cut to now.
The entire point of the Witcher 3 (and by extension, the entire narrative beforehand) is Geralt (the Witcher) and Yennefer (the Witch) trying to keep Ciri (their adoptive daughter) safe, since they were both made involuntarily sterile due to magic, and both just want a family.
Ciri is a daughter of the Elder Blood, which in laymens terms means she can hop dimensions and has access to a different type of primal magic. She can't cast flame spells or runic circles, rather she warps around, modifies her own speed on a time-control level and is a potential walking nuke. Naturally, many factions would like a walking nuke, especially one that can have kids who are also walking nukes (from the Elves, to the Lodge of Witches, to the Empire, and more); so they chase her to the ends of the continent to try to capture her / rape her before she learns how to control it. Geralt and Yennefer just want to live a family life with her, so when she goes missing, they both go on a fucking warpath and individually tear through the continent to find her. Geralt has a hairtrigger for beating men to death who even looked at her the wrong way (at least after he recovers from amnesia in the Witcher 1-2 owing to other events), and Yennefer brags about torturing information out of people while maneuvering high politics alone just to find Ciri and keep her safe.
And yet, the basis of the Witcher 4 is that Ciri is now somehow a processed Witcher, dealing with peasant drama in Koviss.

<body too long
How about a real body then

First, Ciri doesn't need to undergo the gene therapy, because she already is magically attuned. She doesn't need to be able to drink poison to heal, because she already lightly regenerates. Ciri is already millions of times stronger than a Witcher, and does almost everything the alchemy enables (with the exception of heightened senses, which she doesn't need). Did she just want the cat eyes? Did she want to be pre-emptively infertile and sickly? It's stupid. It was assumed the Witcher ending of 3 would just be Ciri taking contracts as she was, not weakening herself to a Witcher for game marketing material.
Second, Geralt and Yennefer would never allow it, because it's a stupid idea. The alchemical process to become a witcher has a kill-rate of over 90%, and only "works" in that it alters a boy's development to grow-into a Witcher rather than just-become a Witcher. For Ciri to go down the Witcher route, she would also need to be either a Viper or a Cat. She can't be a Viper, because her biological father is the emperor that the last Viper tried to appeal to, and for her to go for the Witcher ending, she has to cut ties with him (not that he would allow it either anyways). Hence, she would have to be a Cat, and undergo the most deadly and weakest trial possible, intended for prepubescent human boys, as a biologically abnormal adult female. Geralt hates the process and would never allow it, Yennefer wanted her to become an independent sorceress and would never allow it for the same reasons anyways, everyone hates Cats.
Third, being a Witcher is not a desirable life-path. It's a life of vagrancy for below minimum wage, dealing with peasants who distrust you for looking like a freak and will just as easily stab you in the back once the contract's finished because they can't pay but still need the ghoulie gone. Many witchers died of basic shit like starvation or equipment failure; even before all of them who were murdered. Even before Geralt or Yennefer never allowing it; it's not a desirable life path (at best the Witcher ending of 3 was thought to just be a part-time thing, Ciri helping her adoptive dad out and learning his craft, while being safe by his side).
Finally, monsters are practically extinct, and the political conflict of the continent is decided. Despite rewrites in 3 to make him seem like a schizo chud idiot; Radovid of not!Poland Redania canonically repels the Empire (Polish franchise btw), the pogroms end within a decade as he reconsolidates his power over the church and permisses non-human races, and monsters disappear entirely within the next 50 years. The only remaining places with monsters are the ancient-evil types that nobody wants to deal with, and the remaining witchers being drawn to them like suicidal moths to flame, for lack of any other work - most are in the deep forests and swamps in the central continent (eg the Viy's den). Kovir / Poviss (the setting of the game, not!Switzerland) are in the far-North and never had a monster problem - they were rich and isolated enough to pay top dollar for them to be wiped out (organizing bands of mercenary human specialists who could take them down, without being Witchers), and were never touched by any conflict. They are nothing more than a trading hub and a side-detail of a more intricate world. So why the fuck is a witcher scrounging for work there of all places. As of the end of the Witcher 3's DLC's, Geralt is also retired in Touissant, aka not!Aragon - halfway across the continent, after he just spent years chasing Ciri down to make sure she was safe.

I'm probably forgetting more (oh yeah, Ciri doesn't even do monster hunting in all the endings of 3 - she can also die or become the next-in-line of the Empire as she's re-adopted by her father; so it makes your choices irrelevant); but hopefully you get the idea : it's dumb shit that spits in the face of a franchise that hinges on it's lore and backstory.
And ironically, there's ways they could have taken it without it being illogical dogshit. A prequel set in the Golden Age of Witchers, with Vesemir (the old man of the Wolves) as the protag in his prime. Eskel (the only character who is guaranteed to survive the Witcher 3) has a significant backstory (such as a yandere princess chasing him around that he's trying to avoid) and managed to keep pace with Geralt despite being much weaker and less of a folk celebrity. There was also the tried-and-true method of "make your own character" shit. Geralt's story….. just not being over, and getting dragged out of retirement against his will. A different Witcher entirely - somewhere else, some time else, whatever.
But they HAD to try to recontextualise the line "the real monsters are men" from an insult directed at humanity, to an insult directed at men. They HAD to redesign Ciri's skull and make her because reasons (she's also ageless and surrounded by beauty-obsessed sorceresses btw). We NEED an RPG where you play as a feMC who will invariably be hitting up (male) prostitute joints and with romance quests where you decide who Geralt's daughter fucks!
Did I mention that after the crunch time for the Witcher 3, most of the studio left due to bad work conditions? Yeah, well, guess who they repopulated their studio with? Rejects from a studio that crashed and burned at roughly the same time as CDPR was hiring. Bioware, off of the back of Mass Effect Andromeda. I hate /dup/ buzzword faggotry, since overuse weakens the meaning and it just becomes a bitchy witchhunt - but this is one of the few times it genuinely does apply. Did I also mention CDPR is now all-in on ESG funding, gets writing notes via SweetBaby Inc AND Netflix - basically every buzzword that a retard /dup/fag would throw, CDPR is doing. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on Witcher 4 being doomed to failure.
All the devs who left reformed, and are now responsible for Blood of the Dawnwalker, releasing next month. Keep an eye out for it, it genuinely looks like it'll be good.
