Aside from Youtube I never used any social media so I don't know much about that but I can see its influence on all types of content. It all sucks. Everything is policed and commodified, nobody does anything for fun and even if they get lucky and make something funny, they and everyone else go after it for clout and try to profit off of it. Nobody simply does it 'for teh lulz'. Though it seems that most people are waking up to this which is why there is constant talk about the internet being shit now. I realized it years ago, so I cut my internet usage a lot and pushed myself to do more stuff in the real world like learning a language, to play sports, travel, meet real people etc. Been more fruitful, though I got kinda tired of that too. Now I try to hold a balance between my online/offline life.
>>1537758chan wasn't petfect but there was a decent amount of creativity and cross-board communication. I enjoyed any streaming party like /bane/ & /just/ streams, /wooo/'s wrestlemania streams, /sp/'s superb owl streams etc. I did my best to contribute to some of those as well so it felt good to participate. The sense of community was really nice. I think from 2017 or 2018 onward things got bad. In the post 8chan world, things seem more divided and barren, nothing like that happens anymore or at least on that scale. I wonder how many users
like i did just decided to quit and move on, never to come back, and how few new users joined, if any. Personally, being a young NEET or student on vaccation were the best times and I was more motivated to do things. As time past, I stopped caring. New blood really is essential for a community to thrive.
