Well in screenwriting you have the "protagonist"
what I like to call the "smart character"
And of course the "antagonist." The "dumb character"
And if you're going to have the dumb character DARE
to speak to the smart character
the trick to making sure the smart character sounds smart
which you need
Is to write their response first.
So, let's say the smart character's response to something is…
"I have an MBA from Stanford"
"I memorized the sonnets before I knew how to shit sitting down"
"and I have the first lady on speed dial"
"why don't you ask someone who thinks the Swiss invented the cuckoo clock"
Nice, right?
But it doesn't make any sense
which is why you need the dumb character to first say…
"Hey, could you sign this birthday card for my sick wife?"
From the pieces form the whole
the smart character has put the dumb character in their place
which is to be dumb
And that's dialogue, if you're doing it right
