I stumbled across something really funny recently. There's a japanese series of novels called Guin Saga. Content-wise, it's usually compared to Conan the Barbarian. (I haven't read it.) It's a long running series and has been translated into a bunch of different languages, but what's really interesting is that one country has really shitty covers. I'll post a few different variants on the first book to start off. In order these are:

Guin Saga was one of the direct sources of inspiration for Miura while making Berserk. There are also some similarities with Vampire Hunter D, although I suspect if there was any influence there, it was more about aesthetic than content. But yeah, I know your point is that the Japanese covers are simply a lot more tasteful and congruent with what the books are actually about.
