This guy was the soundtrack to my life for ~30 years. From his soundtracks (Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner, Alexander, The Bounty, etc.) to his other releases (Oceanic, Voices, The City, Direct, just to name a few…), this guy just kept cranking it out and doing it in his own way.
Someone else made the analogy, "What Prince was to Rock, Vangelis was to New Age." The more that I think about it, the more that it fits.
Before Vangelis, a synthesizer score would never be caught dead in a non-sci-fi/horror movie. If you wanted your movie to be taken seriously, you had an orchestra score your soundtrack. Vangelis changed all of that. He made synthesizer music "OK" for Hollywood to use when it came to movies that wanted an Oscar or a Golden Globe. It wasn't a stigma anymore; That's because of Vangelis and his "Chariots of Fire" soundtrack.
Furthermore, he constantly butted heads with record companies and refused to budge when they gave him a bad deal (which was often). He kept changing his sound, going from electronic, to orchestra, to choral, to piano and back again.
And this guy is notorious for unreleased stuff. He has AT LEAST two full unreleased albums in his archives (likely due to bad contracts) and probably several more. His estate could release a full album every year for the next 20 years and not run out of material.
