Really thinking of having these survival foods on preserve to be able to take high protein meals on the regular. Anyone else do this?

Hard tack tastes like fucking cardboard, especially after it's really gone dry after a few months. If you want more protein, just get sportsbro whey powder, it carries far easier than people give it credit for.
Survival food in general is just a dumb grift, tinned stores will last as long as you need them to, especially if you cycle and store it properly. But that's cheap and unprofitable, even if you're not a broke bum and go for decent tinned food (eg Stagg Chili) instead of cheapest dogfood you possibly can (which still, is an option).
Hard tack's purpose is to be lightweight and space-conscious carry-food for multi-week hikes (even before modern processed alternatives that can fit in things you don't have as easy access to like different dried fruits), if you're not doing specifically that, don't bother.

I tried hardtack once in a school history class, and it was horrendous. I can't imagine having to actually eat that. Lobscouse looks good though.

I have very little space to store food in my house, so I've just accepted that I will starve when they engineer the famine.

I think the main purpose of hardtack was to thicken stews with a long cook. I need a high caloric intake due to my high metabolism

Civil War soldiers ate it in different ways. They did whatever they could to make it more palatable.
