was told there are so many alt art and variants of most cards so set collecting is out. any sets people hated and are cheap af?

Dark Ascension, beloved set and the whole thing can be bought second hand for $65
if you want to collect a whole set it's a good way to go

Dragon's Maze is also extremely cheap to collect, with the whole set being $40 secondhand

Honestly if you are just looking to play with the cards, especially if you and your friends don't have already have many/any, just buying a box like that is probably a safe bet.
