You've got to know your job, lay your shadows in properly, get your perspective right, but in color, there it is," he said. "You might say I'm old fashioned, but black and white is real photography."[6] Ford also reportedly argued that the climactic shoot-out between Valance and Stoddard would not have worked in color.

Let's be honest, there's objectively no advantage to black and white photography, it presents a diminished picture of reality. That doesn't mean films shot in black and white should be discounted. Many great films were shot in black and white, particularly when color wasn't an option.

There is if your subject is under complex light play or patterned in textures.
A hack B&W choice was Schindler's List because it doesn't use either situation.

bigger issue is the film was shot on soundtages which mostly looks very cheap
great picture tho
i think i read that the black and white also helps hide john and jimmys age, the characters are supposed to be younger
its still obvious theyr too old but it would probably look worse in colour
