Here's a piece of actual internet lore for you: /pol/ shit originated from left leaning fags in /b/ spamming it because they thought it was the edgiest thing a person could do, and not long afterwards they brought their cancer to reddit because they were already terminally online even back then. So even in that respect reddit was just being derivative since the very beginning. The fact that tons of people who actually believed that shit then showed up doesn't mean jack shit, since anon culture was stolen and misappropriated by every site, not just redditors.

A lot of people are hesitant to admit this nowadays, but a lot of the "ironic racism" of the old days of the Internet was shock humor perpetrated by people whose actual views were either those of outright leftists or just much more mildly critical of the leftist ideals like "diversity" and biological equality. Even a lot of the Nazi imagery on /pol/ back in the early days was there as an agree-and-amplify technique to fuck with critics who would clutch their pearls over the board. I remember informal board polls showing that libertarians were much more common than neo-Nazis at the beginning. By the time of the 8chan exodus, /pol/ had started to genuinely identify much more with National Socialism and also began to be more religious ("dead kike on a stick" rhetoric used to be more common before that). One thing I also don't see mentioned anymore is how invested a lot of people there were in mainstream politics. There was a lot of partisan rhetoric around the 2012 election, and there didn't seem to be any shortage of posters who rallying behind Romney or Obongo. At a time when people are more aware of how rigged the system is, it's funny to look back considering that these were probably people who thought of themselves as being against the establishment yet seemed to be getting pretty passionate about candidates who were about as establishment as you could be.

I remember the Johnny-come-lately interlopers who stumbled across those parts of the Internet and then tried to redefine their culture. One example was that guy who shouted "Pepe" while Hillary Clinton was giving a speech. If I recall correctly, he gave an interview while he mentioned being "alt right" but tried to spin it as some vaguely anti-cuckservative thing. While the original alternative right was a pretty big tent, the truth is that you were out if you couldn't at least accept the HBD stuff.

That's what's happened with the right in general in a lot of ways. Republican civnats have been taking talking points from actual nationalists for around a decade now and then serving up an adulterated, ineffectual imitation of real nationalism. The lines between the two have been becoming more blurred due to Overton window shifts and certain taboos beginning to fade away, which could be a good development overall in terms of serious right-wing ideas losing a lot of their stigma. The downside is that the increased normgroid presence makes it easy for them to co-opt and water down anti-establishment politics to fit their more conventional sensibilities. The rise of "based" Christfaggotry and idealization of trad-dad domesticity are good examples of that. I get that being a bohemian, high-openness type isn't for everyone and that dedicated family men obviously have their place, but in the end pedestalizing that sort of thing just leads down a cul-de-sac of conservative mediocrity. Especially the universalized Judaism of Christfaggotry. There's nothing revolutionary or anti-system about any of that. It's just ersatz rebellion. Even antisemitism is being compromised by low-IQ "noticers" who taste the "Synagogue of Satan" in their sandwiches but whose biggest gripe with them seems to be that they just don't love Yeshua Hamashiach enough.
