What are some good Chinese films and/or shows? As someone trying to learn the language, this is the one area where I struggle the most. I forget where I heard about it but someone recommended Xiao Wu (Pickpocket) and it was unbearable, I couldn't even get past the first half hour. All that happens is some Chinese guy smokes cigarettes and… that's it.

If anyone knows of Chinese media that is actually decent or better, I would highly appreciate if it were to be mentioned ITT. My main goal is improving my listening comprehension so the more the merrier.

Monkey king cartoons

Anything in particular you think I should give a watch?

>>364607
Do you recommend I read the original tale first so that the plot(s) make more sense? Or does that not matter with this sort of media? I know the Monkey King tale is a classic over in that part of the world.

Sure if you an but it's a kids cartoon so it shouldn't be too complex. Try a few episodes and see.

John Woo films are a good place to start. Especially A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled.

I'll give it a shot. Hopefully Barnes & Noble has a copy of The Monkey King so I can read it if I like the show enough. Thank you for the recommendation.

>A Better Tomorrow
>Another movie where the cover is a Chinese guy smoking a cigarette
Uh oh… Jokes aside, I'll give these films a try the next time I've got a chance to sit down. Thank you for the recs.

The 2010 version of Three Kingdoms show was pretty decent, tries to turn Cao Cao into a bit less of a villain and otherwise tells the story pretty competently.
If you want movies just go through John Woo's library.

Why dont' you want to watch a Chinese guy smoking, anon?

Even if it's full blown propaganda, Hero from 2002 by Zhang Yimou is a decent flick. It is a mainland Chinese production and features several mainland actors in addition to some familiar faces from Hong Kong cinema.

That movie has a lot of different posters, some more kino than others.

>another John Woo mention
Noted here and here (>>364711). Seems like this guy's stuff must be real good. Thank you for reminding me also that I need to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms, sadly in English since my Mandarin isn't quite there yet. I love Chinese history.

After trying to stomach Xiao Wu, enough was enough.

>Even if it's full blown propaganda
That's okay, as long as it helps me improve my Mandarin I see it as a net benefit at the end of the day. My only stipulation with any recommendation ITT is that it doesn't blow chunks. I trust you guys.

Will give these a try. Now I have a good list of places to begin.

>>364713
It's all good, I'm surprised you went out of your way to find even more of them. This movie looks quite interesting.

The casting choice in this film was fascinating. The three principal characters were played by an established action star whose stock was beginning to fade almost like his hairline, a Chow Yun-fat who was perhaps at the early years of his peak and an up-and-coming hearthrob who later came out as unbelievably gay. Having said that, Leslie Cheung was great in Shanghai Grand opposite Andy Lau. That movie had a few cartoonish moments which perhaps was intentional, and the two lead actors gave it their all in making the whole thing work.

I always felt like I was being memed to like his films. They're not very funny and rely too much on CG.

Oh I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan. Stephen Chow ruins his jokes with CG.
