I don't think anyone cared enough about Mark Kerr or his career. They wanted to make an MMA version of The Wrestler but with a more uplifting ending, and yet Kerr's life was nowhere near as tragic as The Ram's. There is simply no real drama to work off of and hence there is no real payoff in the third act. Plus Dwayne can't act like he's a vulnerable washed up dude to save his life. It also doesn't help that Blunt is clearly miscast as the mudsharking girlfriend - her aura is just too posh to make it believable.
