Didn't Kate Hudson's character try to rape a boy in this or something? And it was the early 2000s, so audiences were cool with that?

A lot of people really like this movie for some reason. It has a messy script and mediocre direction and a lot of missed opportunities.
It must be a nostalgia thing as Cameron Crowe has no well-regarded post-9/11 movies. That warm nostalgia is really his strongest attribute, and when the cinema lost the taste for that, it lost any use for Cameron Crowe.

Never seen it but it's always on those list of highly rated movies they tell you to see.

Why does it suck?

It's a roastie flick. It actually insists on itself. To summarize the waste of film "she's a victim of the decisions she makes"
