It's more of a setting contemporary with its creation but with '50s-inspired touches. Like how Twin Peaks was later on.

I like Blue Velvet well enough, but it made me feel like I needed a shower when I was done watching it.

David Lynch was a hack. Dune was okay, though.

I wouldn't say that, but his fanboys can be really pretentious. His work is nowhere near as deep as they're making it out to be. The Return is also the only work of his I've seen from this century, and that was crap.

Dune is one of my favorite movies of his and one I have a big soft spot for, but it still wasn't as good as it could have been. One big flaw is how bad the pacing is in the later sections of the movie. The Spicediver edit is superior to both the theatrical edit and the TV version.

I think many of David Lynch's movies only make sense to David Lynch, or those who knew him personally, and his fanboys use mental gymnastics or snippets from interviews to try and piece the puzzle together.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I always thought he worked based heavily on intuition and a dream-like way of creating art, but his fanboys try to rationalize it after the fact as something that's also deep and meaningful. They act like all his artistic decisions were the result of deep insights he had that are only available to their rarefied circle of Lynchian sages who have the discernment to midrashically tease out the hidden profundity and intellectual depth that lies deep within his work. Then there's all the lame fan theories and speculation surrounding his work. It seems to me that by taking such a "left-brain" approach they're missing the entire point.

Me? I just like Twin Peaks because it is comfy 90s PNW kino. My appreciation is the most lacking of depth.

Blue velvet, Fire walk with me, and Lost highway are all kino. Wild at heart is ok. Mulholland drive is overrated, and Inland Empire is shit. So is The return. Lynch never learned how to use digital cameras properly. Dune suffers from short runtime. It should be at least 4 or 5 hours long. Out of the three adaptations, the miniseries has the best length and structure.

I started off as a Dune fanboy, but Twin Peaks ended up becoming my favorite part of his filmography. Once I began watching it, I couldn't stop. I think it's the dark atmospherics and oddball touches mixed in with the more familiar elements that make it work so well. Yeah, there's a notable decline in quality for part of the second season, but even then it was still watchable and unique. A show like The X-Files might seem weirder on its surface in that it lacks such a focus on soap-opera relationship drama and is all about government conspiracies and the paranormal, but in comparison it feels like a more typical procedural show that just so happens to focus on strange subject matter. The weirdness feels more intrinsic to what Twin Peaks is, and I appreciate the fact that it seems to understand the value of leaving matters more open to the viewer's interpretation instead of trying to explain everything away like most shows would try and do.

That's what I've been saying. I think everyone here understands that. It's the midwit Redditors out there who either don't understand that or try to ignore what that entails because they feel the need to overintellectualize everything. Truly accepting his dreamlike style would mean coming to terms with its inherent irrationality and the fact that that's not something they can convincingly use to make other people think they're smart.

It's such a sadness.

Lynch is a fucking hack for midwits. If you want weird inventive kino you always go full Cronenberg.
