>What did Refn mean by this?
Got done watching it, and came up that the entire thing is a film within a film within a film, Sophie's character doesn't know she is being mentally fucked with on set which she is filming a fictional comic book adaptation directed by her father. Meaning that the audience(us) assumes Charles Melton's character(soldier looking for her lost daughter) is a figment of Sophie's character imagination for trauma or some shit, but in reality the soldier guy is a fictional character of the same sci-fi comic they are adapting alongside the leatherman as the slasher killer. Refn purposely did this to make it meta.
