>"Oh wow, amazing grass and ground texture, how did you do that?"
<"Well I painted, added glue and applied dirt and grass separately using an assortment of methods
>"And that water looks amazingly real too, how did you pull that off?"
<"Layers of colored resin that I dyed my self, after setting up some materials to look like a river bed"
>"That castle is pretty neat, how did you create that?"
<"Oh it's 3D printed"
>Mild feeling of disappointment

Would you consider 3D printing to be a respectable form of art or craftsmen ship? Personally I've always found it to be a cheap short cut in actually creating something. There could have been a multitude of other ways he could have constructed that castle, but 3D printing feels the careless and laziest way to go about it. The disappointment I feel is the same as if someone just printed out their painting on an inkjet printer.

How does anon feel about it? Can it work as it's own medium or is it just the lazy man's modeling clay?

 No.343

3D printing is an absolute meme and an affront to artistry.

>"the same as if someone just printed out their painting on an inkjet printer."
That's pretty much 3D printing in a nutshell. It merely imitates quality, but lacks the finish compared to something hand-made. It can give you the high detailing you want, but you're still using shitty plastics and the finished product is scratchy and rough looking because it's made like a coiled turd.

It's pretty cool.

If he designed the castle himself in a program like CAD or Sketchup I accept it.

This, so long as it was a design he made himself I don't see anything wrong with it; some people are really good at designing shit but suck at sculpting and I see 3D printing as an acceptable way to get around the problem

This is a huge problem with all the modeling industry right now. All the big companies are now using 3D modeling software so it's generic slush being produced. It lacks the human touch so it feels the same way auto tuned pop music does. It's just missing vital parts of the quality.

3D printers are fine for additional details you can't buy else where. Say you want to build a really rare tank and no one makes a kit, then sure buy a basic model then 3d print the unique aspects which are annoying to hand produce. It's no different to buying resin add ons at that point. The issue is now everyone is relying on tools like 3D printers and airbrushing in place of skill. The hobby completely changes and loses a lot of it's personality. Everyone using the same tools for the same bland finishes where the perfect blend matters more than the overall piece. It's why 80's models are having such a revival right now. It gets away from this generic slush everything has become.

3D printing itself not, but 3D modeling surely yes. Same reason why a replica using a mold isn't artful but the original sculpture is.

 No.2570

Man I don't really care about artistry, I just don't want to pay $1500 for a 40K titan model from Forge World when I can buy a $300 3d printer and print one out myself.

Speaking of 3d models, does anyone have any experience on painting and finishing them? I hate the little grooves the plastic makes when the printer layers. I tried sanding, but it leaves a lot of little scratch marks in their place. Think something like a heat gun would work better?

 No.2580

>>2579
Maybe a lacquer filler? A heat source that is melting down the surface layer is hot enough to make the model malleable in a way you probably don't want.

From what I've seen on youtube about 3d prints the best approach is a thin coat of UV curing resin to fill in the layer lines and then after curing with UV light you sand it down. Another technique is using acetone fumes but it only works on certain types of plastics and you lose a lot of detail.

Haven't done any 3d printing yet but I'll probably buy a Sovol SV01 Pro next month. I've been collecting pictures and ideas of things to print for years now.

Please do not fed post. I unironically have an FBI file and posting shit like this is going to end up with me getting GAHOOLED. I don't want to lose all my equipment I just bought because you couldn't contain your autism. Gahoole still hasn't gotten his stuff back from the FBI and likely never will. I just don't want to get fucked in the ass by Games Workshop and their kikish ways when I can just design and print my own minis since no one where I live will give a fuck if I use homemade minis instead of official ones.

Also Gahoole should buy a 3d scanner so he can scan his face. Imagine using Gahoole's face for an army of Plague Marines.

Also also vapor smoothing with acetone seems to be the cheapest and easiest way to do it with ABS/ASA filament. PLA is non-reactive to acetone and thus requires the filament be blended with additives which can weaken the printed product. Ethyl Acetate and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) can sometimes be used to smooth PLA, but they are dangerous as fuck to work with and you probably don't want to be doing that shit in your house.

It's for airsoft. No joke either. Training for close quarters combat with accurately simulated firearms at 1/100th the cost, hardly any of the potential safety hazards(just wear basic eye protection) and with hundreds of other likeminded people at large events regularly combined with no legal issues surrounding it is the obvious thing to do in these times.

In typical war zones of the 21st century even conflicts in Africa that nobody cares about get flooded with weapons and ammunition by outside interests. Stocking up beforehand is idiotic and just makes you a high value target to take out, I've turned down free firearms from several people throughout the years due to the current legal climate of overfunded and overstaffed law enforcement who have nothing better to do.

>Also Gahoole should buy a 3d scanner so he can scan his face

No need for that as there's enough video of him that you could feed it into meshroom or other photogrammetry software and get a decent result.

Can the vol ask Gahoole if he can add .stl to the accepted files on this board?

Also holy fuck this is taking a while to work out how to do properly. I keep printing this model

for a bed leveling test and finding little errors in production that I need to iron out. I am on my fourth print and am slowly getting my shit together. This print quality guide helps a lot.
https://www.simplify3d.com/support/print-quality-troubleshooting/
Also it turned out that the first pair of calipers I bought was miscalibrated. Also a feeler set is LOT better than trying to use a piece of paper to level the bed.

I ran into the same dragging error three prints in a row on that test print and pulled my mat off my build plate and got the calipers out. There was a .45 deviation on one corner of my factory build plate and that was what was fucking everything up. I ended up ordering a glass bed so that should unfuck my shit. All that is left is to build an enclosure, run ventilation, and I can get down to business. Also the stock leveling springs are pretty shit on the Ender series and need to be readjusted every print. So I ended up buying some after market springs that are stiffer which should fix it.

For the enclosure I ordered some acrylic sheets and I am working on some designs for an enclosure that will allow me to have proper ventilation for the power supply and exhaust for fumes. I built a work bench a couple of weeks ago so I am going to dedicate a corner of my living room to being a work station because nothing gets a woman's panties wet more than when some guy brings her home from the bar and the first thing she sees when she walks into his house is a wall of tools and fabrication machinery.

Bitches love hobbyists.

Whelp my soldering iron burnt out while I was replacing the themistors on my heatbed with thermocouplers so now I am stuck waiting a week for a new soldering iron to make it out here to the boonies. I started this post intending to shit on the country for not having tools, but then I realized I can't remember the last time I saw a soldering iron in the city. America really has decayed if there isn't enough interest in metropolitan areas for any store to carry the most basic tool for a trade.

Oh also GulfCoast Robotics manufactures some really high quality 3d printer parts at good prices. I ordered an Aluminum build plate from them and when I gauged it out there was zero deviation I could detect. 100% manufactured in America and made to order. If you want to upgrade your printer you should check them. Also MicroSwiss machines top tier hotends. If you want to work with high temp thermoplastics (nylons etc) I highly recommend you look into their all metal hotends. MicroSwiss is also 100% made in America by three brothers from Minnesota, so you could probably drive over to see them in person if you need something custom manufactured Gahoole.

You're not leveling you're tramming. And the best test print I've found is to print a dozen or so thin squares all around the bed. Number them, peel 'em off then use calipers to find any deviation.

>>2579
Just get an SLA printer for printing high detail 3d models that don't need much finishing. FDM is best suited for rapid prototyping or rough and ready parts.

Here's one of the first prints I did on my 4k mono SLA with cheap resin to give you an idea of the quality. It's Asuka on a penny, had to zoom in quite a lot to show the layer lines, they're not visible to the naked eye.
