>>10508There are too many to list. Some of my fondest memories of early childhood are of getting Super Nintendo games from the rental place. These are a few of them. Claymates wasn't really that good, but I still liked it back then. I also remember renting Clay Fighter II, and I ended up coming across the original game in Wal-Mart and getting it thinking it was the same one I played. I think I was disappointed when I realized it wasn't the same game. The games I rented didn't really even have to be all that good, although obviously some were better than others. I don't even like the Clay Fighter games anymore other than for their personal nostalgic value. At that age renting games like those was something I really looked forward to. Having every old game out there available to immediately play for free just doesn't feel the same.
When it comes to the SNES, Super Mario World was the first one I played. The whole world exploration element felt magical to me at that age. And because it was a time before I even knew what the Internet was, games felt more mysterious. Being such a little kid, it felt like Super Mario World was full of secrets it was reluctant to give up. I remember that I used to like beating Bowser to watch the ending sequence and look at all the enemies. I would wonder where Torpedo Teds were. I don't think I ever unlocked Soda Lake until I hit puberty. I was probably a teenager or young adult.

I unironically liked OG Final Fantasy 7 and was disappointed by what the (((localization))) team did with the 7R entries. A quick google will show you a GameFAGs thread where the OP is shat on by almost the entire board for saying that half the time the English subtitles don't actually match the Japanese audio - not just differing in nuance but totally saying different things - but from my own experience playing Remake and Rebirth he wasn't even exaggerating. The game's shills would outright lie to defend their piece of shit trannylation.
If we're talking 16-bit games only then beat-em-ups and shoot-em-ups like Dinosaurs for Hire were kino.
No.10651
>>10648I unironically think the "OG" FFVII was an extremely cancerous development in RPGs with its intense cinematic focus, and an unfortunate downgrade in the FF series by being a piss easy joke with only two challenging mainline bosses in the whole game. You're not going to convince me that FFVII was good now just because Squeenix is cashing in on its corpse.

>>10646I generally feel that way, but the NES is probably my favorite console of all. Part of it might be because it was the first console I ever played and feels comforting to me, but I also just like the games and the aesthetic. I kind of wish I'd been born early enough to rent NES games, but instead I was born at a weird time where I started playing video games with them and then was introduced to NES emulation a few years later.
For me the triumvirate of game consoles is the NES, SNES, and the Sega Genesis. I don't know if I can pick a favorite between the latter two.
>>10647That trend actually goes back to before the 16-bit consoles really hit their stride, at least in North America. I was thinking maybe Bonk's Adventure being released in Japan might have had something to do with it, but Adventures of Dino Riki and Caveman Games both predate that.

Last time I beat FF7 at the lowest possible level (that's where my "only two challenging mainline bosses" claim comes from btw), I didn't feel the railroading much less than a standard play. The main skill is simply to abuse the shit out of the Enemy Skill materia. There are loads of RPGs that are a lot more interesting and fun to exploit mechanically.

I grew up with the 16-Bit ones most people prefer and are more familiar with, but eventually I got a PS2 and wanted to replay the Sonic titles I grew up with, which lead me to the best compilations ever made, Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Gems Collection, which all had a ton of 8-Bit titles… Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble are just as good as the 16-Bit classics to me. I'd also love to mention Sonic Pocket Adventure, love how it has a classic/modern hybrid aesthetic to it too.

>>10508Spider-Man (2000) by Neversoft might just be my favorite video game of all time, I love the IP, the character of Peter Parker, and the 90's TV show this title was lightly based on… they nailed the character in 3D and this might've been the 1st time where any video game made you truly feel like him, even if some 2D titles before this were also quite good. I think my main issue was 100% completion, because of the Quick-Change suit, you had to get 10.000 points in one of the training modes and it took me literal years to do it, I did once and I'll never even bother trying it again, it was torture. I'm happy to say that this version of the character saw more than a single title, there was the PS1 exclusive sequel, the GBC port, the original sequel to the GBC port, and then a GBA title that functions as a 3rd installment for both the PS1 and GBC duologies, and all of these titles are excellent still.
Spider-Man is just so cool.

>>11782>I remembered finding it strange that Mario punched in that game.I have no idea why they even bothered adding it too, it's basically useless - you interact with bowser's tail or king bob-omb's backside, you jump on goombas, and I GUESS you hit eyerok's eyes but… just replace that with something else, honestly. Throw green shells or something. I guess they just didn't want to do physics, so I guess that makes sense, but I really can't remember any other time you really need to punch things. Why bother adding it?
No.11816
>>11811There was a precedent for Mario punching in Super Mario RPG. The punch attack in SM64 was nuanced; whilst it was used primarily for grabbing, you could also do cool stuff with it like punch-sliding up to Goombas.

>>13021EAFC25 and eFootball are abominations even compared to their 2017 counterparts, canadians should be banned forever at making football games and the japanese should play old FIFAs and make a proper player movement engine from the 7th gen, the 8-directional is a great system from the SNES era but EA in their creative swansong years created the 360 degree system for FIFA 10 through 13 that made anything buttery smooth regardless of graphics.
And it's a funny thing, japs usually disregard the graphics for the gameplay yet PES/eFootball is a massive whore regarding GRAFIX and animations rather than focusing on league systems and core gameplay, their customization system from the PS2 days is what keeps them afloat in the modding world and mostly because EA made modding newer games a massive pain.
Football Manager is/was the tits but sadly has no gameplay so it's a moot point.
No.13050
>>13043Indeed. I feel even more upset at eFootball because while EA are absolute hacks now, Konami felt like they were going somewhere with titles like eFootball PES 2021: Season Update, even if the name itself sounded ridiculous, I was hopeful, expectations were realistic of course, but still quite optimistic, that the follow up would be special, eFootball 2022 wasn't.
I think the worst part is how eFootball's still around, if it had failed they would've gone back to PES, so why haven't they? Probably because it's making them money, people let eFootball succeed, so we get what we deserve, supply and demand.

Let's say I love soccer, I want to play instead of just watching… I have to set up a match with people who need to be available at the same time, it'll take time and money, and God knows when we'll be able to do it again, or I can just play by myself which is dull. On a video game, not only do I get around this issue, but I can enjoy an abstract and fantastical fantasy just as you've mentioned, I support a team that will never win anything, in a video game I can take them to actual glories, I can fulfill my dream of being a professional player getting payed by clubs and winning awards, play for the national team, etc… there's lots of room for fantasy.

Getting even more into Dawn of War, a game I always loved, I figured out even more mechanics and tidbits back then and it made it even more enjoyable to play.
Didn't play it for like 12 years, but I did play other RTS games and got a better eye for detail in general so that helped somewhat.
Deus Ex is probably the biggest example, the amosphere and writing are there, the gameplay is just unfinished and it's super evident if you don't rush the objective which is how the devs expected you to play the game instead of exploring the whole map.

I steer clear of any tcg video games anymore other than Hearthstone for the reasons you described.
