Endchan seems like a good alternative to 8chan. It's a lot more active than 8chan.moe and, without any of the baggage. Plus you can create and manage your own board there too.

That said, I don't know much about the behind-the-scenes mechanics of the site. Also, Endchan uses slightly primitive software for its image board. Not too different though.
