I was more open to newer bands when I was in high school, but I've noticed since then that I rarely ever have the urge to come back to most of the stuff that was current around that point. I just find most of it grating productionwise. I unironically like Fuckin' A by Anal Cunt, but that also sounds like a mix of Venom and early Motley Crue, which appeals to me.
Maybe I'll give some of those bands a chance, but I'm hard to please and also tend to be into more melodic music unless I'm in the right mood for something really intense. When I was a teenager, I remember listening to extreme metal while doing my homework and not having any problems. These days I have problems concentrating even with more low-key genres types of music playing in the background. I prefer to revisit older albums I used to listen to than constantly seek out new metal releases the way I did in high school.

I remember listening to a bit of gabber and hardstyle around that period too, not that hardstyle is all that fast. I love electronic music, but I'm more into slower, atmospheric types like ambient or downtempo or more mellow or poppy styles. When it comes to fast electronic music, I'd rather listen to Goa trance than cybergrind. Even then that's not the kind of thing I listen to every day.
