My opinion is he looked like he had a mental break from the antagonism and did not know what to do. He charged them thinking that was proper representation of himself, but once he got up to them, he was completely lost and confused, wandering around dazed. Combine this with ESL, he was overwhelmed from the start by the drug fueled youths. I think all the police interrogation errors and aftermath could have been explained by this, but I think the jury saw him touching his knife in his pocket as he approached and wandered, and it was over.
