Their goal is to create multiple pockets of forever micro-wars just like Saudi Arabia vs Yemen, the current Syrian debacle, and Israel's own ongoing thing with Palestine, not to mention countless others that are still going on in the hellhole that is the Middle East. If Iran was ever serious about btfoing Israel they'd have already taken Tel Aviv and they're not doing so because they also have something to gain from the current stalemate, not because they're afraid of murrican retaliation.
