>>332333>>332342>>332390So what is "good anime"? Because apparently Akira is the peak of anime and that was dogshit. What anime should I watch if I want something with no mecha, demons, robots, pirates, vikings, fantastical elements of any kind, no schoolgirls/boys, no fetish bait, no harems, no body swapping, no hot springs, no magical other worlds, no fantasies for virgins etc. Is there such a thing as grounded anime?
Dreamlike elements are fine if it's otherwise grounded (like in The Sopranos)

No.332453
>>332450Thanks, will check it out, sounds interesting
No.332465
>>332446Why would you even make an anime if not to have some sort of fantastical element that's much harder to effect in a live-action film? Just make a live-action drama if you're going to have a "grounded" story.
No.332469
>>332465Okay then, are there any with fantastical plots, but no autistic acting characters, no saturday morning cartoon plots, no self-inserts, no stupid shit that breaks believability etc. Basically I am just wondering, does anime exist with same level of gripping emotional storytelling and character development as live action movies/TV, and if not, why would anyone bother with it
No.332477
>>332473Thanks but sounds like a soap opera. Is there really no anime that is like a good HBO show? I shit on anime all the time but it can't all be bottom of the barrel right?

No.332487
>>332446>what is good anime?The 1980s and 1990s. Some early 2000s like NHK.
As with everything else, anime went to shit after 2008. Obama ruined everything. Maybe you'll find an exception. Like AOT was a great S1, and S2 and S3 were decent enough to keep hope alive but everything after was SHIT. Isayama cucked hard.
Now? It's over for anime.

No.332546
>>332542The first one that comes to mind is Shirobako, the best anime about anime I've ever seen, even better than Otaku no Video. A lot of people dismiss it as another CGDCT slice of life show when it's really more about a fat animation director trying to have a come back while going through a mid-life crisis than anything else.
Girlish Number is another good about the same subject. It also looks like a CGDCT show at first but it's actually quite a sobering, All About Eve-esque story about the politics of show business.

Here's how I rank the Ghibli films that I've seen:
1. Nausicaa
2. Laputa
3. Kiki
4. Totoro
5. Porco Rosso
6. Mononoke I'd rank this higher if it used traditionally painted cells
7. Grave of the Fireflies
8. Spirited Away
Are any of the others worth watching.
No.334169
>>334157The only ones I've seen are
Grave of the Fireflies 5/5,
Spirited Away 5/5,
Ponyo 4/5, and
My Neighbor Totoro 5/5. I'm going to see
Castle in the Sky in a couple of weeks at the theater.
No.334186
>>334157Howl's moving castle is the worst piece of shit movie I've seen in a coon's age, don't bother with that one. The one about the guy building the jap fighter plane was awesome though.
No.334216
>>334157>>334186I like both of those, though I might be partial to Howl because it was the second Ghibli film I saw. The guy who voices the plane inventor in the Wind Rises is actually Anno, the director of Evangelion (who also designed most of Nausicaa's monsters)
>>334157>>334169Ponyo is the one I'd say is the most questionable. Don't really like that one much at all. There's a 1995 romance film called Whisper of the Heart about the song Country Roads that's pretty enjoyable. It gets overlooked because it's not a Miyazaki film.
Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro is a secret/honorary Ghibli film, it was Miyazaki's first film and probably my favorite film he's made.
He also directed a 26 episode anime series called Future Boy Conan that is excellent as well.
