What's the best rip of this? I downloaded two torrents, neither of which looked very good. One is still stuck at 99%, and I think the other one had Russian subtitles hardcoded into it.

Then it's silents you don't like, not that silents were ever completely silent in the first place. Silent movies at their peak effectively combine imagery with music. It's filmmaking at its most purely cinematic. The Birth of a Nation even beat Apocalypse Now to the punch in its use of the "Ride of the Valkyries," and that was basically the movie that showed the industry how it was done.
