I flipped on women's softball over the weekend just to see what it was about. Grossed me out, dude. These women are 18-22 years old and they all looked ran through already. Some of them were fat and they were all chestlets.

Nokotan I think(?), but let's forget about it for a moment and realize how many of this highschool nothingburger animes get forgotten the day they premiered and cannibalized by trannies.

Archie is basically proto-Anime. It's set in high-school. You have the love triangle with the dark-haired girl and the sweet blonde-haired girl, then there's the comic-relief boneheaded best friend, and the chad rival. You have tropes like the beach episode, the ski-lodge episode, the Halloween episode, etc. It's very kino.

I haven't read any Archie comics since I was a kid, but I look back on them fondly. There's a charming wholesomeness to them. It's kind of depressing how that kind of naive innocence is gone now.

Have any mangakas or anime directors in the high school genre ever said in interviews that they drew inspiration from Archie?

Old-school anime that come to mind as being similar to Archie are Kimagure Orange Road and stuff by Rumiko Takahashi such as Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku, but there's no indication that either writer was inspired by it at all (seems highly improbable that a Japanese would ever read Archie). Both are kino shows/manga by the way. Maison Ikkoku especially is a must watch - very sweet show, very long at 96 episodes (+ OVAs), it captures 80s Japan (a.k.a. heaven on earth) better than any other anime I've seen. Totally hilarious, it takes place over the course of a few years so a ton of events and arcs transpire, it was so engrossing that I remember watching it all over the course of 3 days many years ago. The basic gist is the MC falls head over heels over the woman who is the manager of his boarding house, who is two years older than him. He starts the show out being a very immature student shamefully having to repeat his first year of university, but tries to prove himself over the course of the show while dealing with rival chad (hilarious). There's also a very short live-action movie adaptation of the show which is fun as well.

Later romcom anime just remix, reuse, and pay homage to the tropes classics like Maison Ikkoku set in place - Love Hina comes to mind (like when the two MCs accidentally meet each other at the bathhouse). Not that this is a bad thing, it's just something you can't help but notice.

I think it's possible. The trajectory of modern Japanese media culture in the postwar era was profoundly affected by American influence. Archie comics were a big cultural export, so they had to at least be aware of its premise. On the other hand, a lot of these tropes about school life and love triangles are art imitating life. In many ways it's the stuff everyone goes through as they come of age, which is why it's universally relatable. It's just that Archie was really the first medium to put it to paper. If you're an artist in Japan back then, and you're planning a romcom, I'd wager you would have had a look at Archie, just as Walt Disney walked so Miyazaki could run.

Thanks for the recs, I will definitely give them a watch, based on your review. I'm going through my backlog in reverse.

She did say:
>"I do not know many, but at times I find American comic strips appealing, they have very beautiful designs."
She never explicitly said Archie though.
Also I just finished Maison Ikkoku, very good show. I think I will be watching Orange Road soon as well but I have heard it is not as good.
