They were popular because they used to be funny, and they used to have a reputation for giving cynical and incisive movie reviews. But they've completely lost any drive or passion, and the cat's out of the bag for a long time now in regard to their lack of movie knowledge and integrity. Civnats love to go on about traits like hard work and vague "values" being the main bases for American identity, which is both historically inaccurate and nonsensical. Working hard is a trait that can be found anywhere (although definitely in some places more than others), so they're basically saying that some sweatshop worker in China is as American as anyone. If anyone is a potential American, then what exactly is so meaningful about being an American? The more inclusive and all-encompassing a category becomes, the less meaningful it is. Civic institutions also have little relevance to nationality, and the civnat conception also leads to people conflating the nation with the state. Nationality pertains to descent from a people with shared blood and cultural origins. "Muh Constitution" in and of itself isn't a foundation for nationality, and even an American who disagrees with the people who founded the American state will still be an American. To say otherwise would be a bit like saying that Nietzsche was somehow not a German because he criticized his own people and larped as Polish.

Either the historical definition is recognized as the correct one, or the concept of being "American" should be downplayed as something no longer very relevant. America's historical European roots are its most essential aspect. Do you even think a non-white culture would have produced something like the Bill of Rights? I'd much rather have descendants who settle down with whites from overseas than a "fellow American" with mongrelized or entirely dissimilar ancestry to the types of people who built and populated North America prior to 1900 or so.

Maybe there's a more accurate modern estimate out there, but also about 80% of colonial Americans were of British Isles descent going off my memory of what Lothrop Stoddard wrote in Reforging America. Their shared roots might be more broad, but Americans are a specific breed of New World Europeans whose identity grew out of the old frontier culture and tensions with Indians and Africans.
