What is the big anime genre these days? It was isekai for a while, then it was romcoms, then I stopped keeping up with new anime.
No.365968
>>365964Isekai has morphed into the worst possible outcome: endless video game shit. Everything has to be a video-game fantasy land now, with video game rules for everything no matter how completely moronic and impractical. Everyone has to have a class, and stats, and level-ups, and "skills", etc. It makes for incredibly flaccid drama and I can't figure out why these people won't just make the games with the mechanics they're trying to depict in their half-assed stories. Some of them sound like they would be pretty fun to play.
No.365969
>>365968Just bugman things anon, Isekai can't be fun and at least rip.off Tolkien. Faraway Paladin half did that and it was actually okay.
No.365971
>>365964Still Isekike though it's being phased out
No.365972
Plenty of other stuff to watch besides isekai. There's an anime for everybody.
No.365973
>>365968the game isekai is based on the broader trend of romanticization of MMOs despite them all being shit
>>365964action shonen is still the top dog in japan, Dragon Dall Daima, Dandadan, the Conan films, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Railgun season 3, Spy X Family, my hero academia have all been big performers in the last 5 years
isekai is number 2 and has an extreme volume of new titles coming out, but in terms of how many people are actually, watching action shonen is still winning
technically, there is a 0th place reserved for stuff like chibi maruko-chan, sazae-san, weekly conan episodes, curious george, crayon-shin chan, precure, and butt detective which seem to have a weird audience comprised of both people over 40 and kids under 10.
action shonen will sometimes spike past these when it gets really popular, but these are consistently the top watched works of animation in japan (and no, I don't know why Curious George, which is actually the same show that appeared on PBS Kids in America for a decade, is so popular)

>>365974of course that's part of it, but no one seems to know why curious george specifically is popular in japan and not something else, it's pretty much the only western cartoon that has had serious long term penetration into the anime market
seems to be that they just think the character is cute
it might also have something to do with the fact frank welker made the monkey noises and they didn't have to dub over it
