I know sports video games often don't have the best reputation, that's mostly thanks to their current direction of monopolies focused on PvP online play only to capitalize on microtransactions as much as it can. However it wasn't always like this, video games began with titles like Tennis For Two and Pong, sports are fundamental to this medium, I have many fond memories of playing video games based on sports I like, either arcade or simulation, often something in between, it's all a treat if done well. It'd be cool to have a thread for this genre for once.

I love Winning Eleven more than anything else, what do you all play?

Sony started losing their way in the middle of the PS3's lifecycle when they removed backward compatibility with new versions of the hardware when they realized they could resell people their PS2 games again digitally. I've given Space Jam (PS1) a shot.

I like that it went for sprites instead of 3D models and in general feels like an attempt to translate one of my favorite films and IPs into a clone of titles like Arch Rivals and NBA Jam, which I'm very much down for, I also like how many options it gives customization wise, so you can choose 2v2 or 3v3, and even a few of the rules. Overall I'm glad I played this one..

It's not all good though, It's a pain to get the ball back, not as satisfying as the titles it's ripped off/took inspiration from, but losing the ball or missing a shot's way easier, so the CPU scores 95% of their attacks, I struggled to win the main mode, the Intergalactic Championship, on "Easy", because of this, especially because it requires 5 wins in a row, it's so BS honestly.

Anyways, a pretty average title.

It was the peak of World Cup video games specifically too. 1998 and 2002 were good, but nothing compared to 2006, 2010 and 2014, after that 2018 and 2022 were subpar DLC on FIFA, and now 2026 we have FIFA being made by Netflix instead of EA, of course EA had their issues, but Netflix? It marked the beginning of the end. DLCs became a thing which led to microtransaction and other online B.S.
Paid online popularizes by Xbox live. The generation killed split-screen. The CODidfication of games with recoverable health. Most normalfags hopped on here too as things got more corporate. Towards the end the SJWs and liberal goons made their moves to making it all gay.

Looking back, there were some decent games, could get away with saying nigger online etc, technological advancements were also there.

Mixed bag of a gen honestly.
