I think it's more gruesome than that. It might seem pretty tame today, but I can't imagine there were very many songs about bleeding to death in a hospital back then.

Part of it also comes just comes down to the creepy sound of it. Back in the '50s stations banned "Rumble" by Link Wray even though it was an instrumental. Apparently just the title and raucous guitar playing for the time were enough to justify it.
